Overview
The days of airline carry-on baggage rules being mere guidelines are long gone. Heightened security measures have mandated a crackdown on every piece of carry-on luggage. The Transportation Safety Administration has strict regulations detailing what is allowed in carry-on baggage and how much each passenger can take aboard a commercial aircraft. Many airlines have even stricter policies. Failure to follow carry-on rules for air travel could result in forced checking of your luggage; you may even be denied boarding.
Number
Virtually every commercial airline in the world allows each airline passenger to take one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item. A personal item can be a backpack, purse, laptop computer case or briefcase.
Dimensions
The international size limit for carry-on luggage is 45 linear inches. This is the total of the length plus the width plus the height of the bag. For your convenience, most luggage manufacturers make carry-on luggage that measures exactly 45 linear inches. Your personal item may be up to 36 linear inches.
Weight
The international weight limit for carry-on bags and personal items is 40 pounds. This includes the bag and all its contents. It is a good idea to weigh your carry-on bag before leaving home. If it is within 3 pounds of the maximum, remove some items. Airline scales will be more accurate than your home scale.
Restricted and Banned
All carry-on liquids must be in 3.4 ounce containers that fit inside a single quart-size zip-top bag. Pack any additional liquids in your checked luggage. Items that are sharp, flammable, explosive, hazardous or could be used as a weapon are not allowed in your carry-on bags; this includes tools like hammers, screwdrivers and box cutters, as well as sporting goods like hockey sticks, baseball bats and ice skates with blades.
Exceptions
You can carry breast milk, baby formula and medicine in amounts that exceed the liquid limits. Certain other items can be carried onto an airplane in reasonable quantities for personal use, and are not subject to the carry-on baggage limits. These include coats, hats, food, reading material, umbrellas, diaper bags, child safety seats and medical equipment.
