Souvenirs
Souvenirs are an important part of any road trip. Purchasing shot glasses, potholders, coasters and playing cards emblazoned with the name and emblems of a variety of states is a traveler's rite of passage. Stop and visit the Dog Patch Trading Post (dogpatchtradingpost.com) in London, Kentucky. This down-home, country shop, founded in 1950 and located at the intersection of I-75 and Kentucky-80, is a must-see as you make your way south. Explore the Plantation House Gift Shop (no website; 452 1st St. W.; Arabi, GA 31712; 229-273-5205) in Arabi, Georgia as well, to purchase goodies like jams and jellies, key chains, coffee mugs, t-shirts and wind chimes, and to experience friendly Georgia-style customer service.
Flora and Fauna
Kids and adults alike often enjoy a trip to the zoo. Stop by the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden before you exit Ohio, and stroll among the cages to view animals from around the world. Let the kids ride the rides and take in a show at the 4D theater. Alternatively, visit the Zoo Atlanta. View a plethora of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. Visit the horticultural gardens, and view a variety of exotic and unusual species of plants as well.
Historic Homes
Atlanta is home to several historic houses. Swan House is one of particular note and is only a short trip from Interstate 75. This home that belonged to the Inman family is the ultimate in luxury from the 1920s and 30s and can be viewed via audio or guided tour. A side-trip to Tallahassee, Florida will allow you to visit the Knott House, located at the Museum of Florida History. Built in 1843, the Knott House survived the Civil War unscathed and served as temporary headquarters for the Union Army.
